99 miles running in 51 days...

i have completed running 99 miles this year. The target for this year is 1000 miles...To achive this goal,i have to run an average of 3.3 miles for the rest of this year (considering non runnin days of 30 days for my india trip, sickness etc)

The Bridges of Madison County

The following are two beauiful statements from the movie...

"I dont think obsessions have reasons, that is why they are obsessions."

"The Old dreams were good dreams. They did not workout, But i am glad i had them."

Initially i felt Francesca's motive is driven by physical lust, then when i watched some selective scenes from the initial part of the movie, i felt its not just about physical lust. She is just swept away by clint eastwood's personality.

Precor Commercial Treadmill for Home

Kavitha and I liked the Precor C954 treadmill at our Spectrum healthclub. Though there were many treadmills available with better features like inbuilt fan and more programs, the Precor C954 treadmill was amazing. The Ground effects technology that Precor uses is so good that one would not feel any pressure on the joints. Its also easier to run faster on this treadmill than any other treadmill. So when we decided to buy a treadmill for our home, this was the first choice. When i enquired with Precor, i realised thhat this treadmill costs $7500. That was surely not the investment i was willing to make. Then, i slowly realised that the number of this treadmill at Spectrum kept decreasing and that had me worried. What if they remove everything from there? WHere will i run? SO i went and asked the manager if they would be selling me one of the treadmill that they have been removing from this place and they said YES. So, finally, i brought home this baby for $700. Kavitha and I ran our first 2 miles today on this machine. Kavitha ran in the evening and i ran at midnight. I am tensed and awaiting news from the resident at the 2nd floor, if i disturbed them.

En Enakku Mayakkam - Naan Avan Illai

This is one of the best tamil song, that kept me humming for a long time..

Best sleeping experience

We have been putting Rishi to sleep by putting him on to a graco swing. Even when he does not want to sleep, the constant swing action (sometimes for over 30 minutes), makes his brain go dizzy and then he eventually sleeps...All through this time, we have to sing some song in addition to the swing's automated animal sound (he likes the forest sound). Three Days back, Kavitha decided to read books to him by putting him on to the bed and then swith off the lights after 20 minutes of reading. After the lights are off, he lies on the bed and tosses and turns and goes to sleep after 30 minutes or so. He has not made any Drama till now, hope he continues to go to sleep like this.

Coming to my sleep, i lie down with him and am are of my going into the sleep state. Till date, i go to bed when i really feel sleepy and then fall asleep without knowing. But with him around me, i have to be little conscious and in that process i am realising myself going to sleep and this is a wonderful experience. I can slowly feel my feet getting warm and my body getting real cosy. The feeling at this time is so great that i have started to love it. Its real joy to be conscious of going into the unconcious state (to the sleep mode).

Sore Throat Remedy

Close your eyes and buy this product. Your sore throat will vanish in 5 min. Basically it numbs your throat and you can no longer feel the pain. I used to suffer from sore throat just after getting up in the morning and it used to hurt so bad, i can not swallow anything. This medicine was a miracle. The Pharmacist from CVS phamacy recommended this to me and i am greatly indebted to him.

I have been wanting to write this in my blog since long time.

To Buy or Not to Buy Home Treadmill

We are confused whether to buy a treadmill for home...Cost $1200. Its a used commercial grade Precor. Hell, we should buy, is what i think. Please provide clarity. We want to run 5 days a week atleast. I want to run 1000 miles this year. Reason to buy this specific treadmill: This is the treadmill model we are most comfortable with and have been running on this in Spectrum Health Club.

Big Apple Bagel

Aruna Jeyaraman, one of my collegue and friend, introduced me to this heavenly place. I love their bagel, coffee and muffin. Try their Jalepeno bagel with jalepeno cream cheese, if you preder a non sweet bagel. Else try Cinnamon laced apple pie bagel with apple cinnamon cream cheese OR Strawberry white bagel with strawberry creamcheese. Their Breakfast blend coffee is divine. Their "Deep Dish Apple Pie" muffin is delicious. Its available as mini muffin as well as the standard size muffin. There is one on Fredericksburg road in san antonio, Tx.

Two of my collegues recommended this place and asked me to try ButterBurger, crinkle cut fries and frozen custurd. Give it a try. You can surely find one close to you.

Moon and Man

Chandra ma manaso jathaha...

Mind and Man is related, thus said vedas. I did a research to check the stock market return with moon's waxing and waning. I found that the average return turned better as the full moon approached.

I was very surprised when one of my colleague who worked in an ER in a hospital told me that on the New Moon Day, they would get crazy cases where people did crazy thing come to ER as patients. I guess their mind went crazy on that day and they did crazy thing that made them get admitted in Emergency Room...

Last man on earth

If god decided to just keep one man on this planet it has to be Steve Jobs. I had this feeling after Steve speak to Macworld 2008 Keynote. He is so amazing. I am really interested to know what an apple employee has to say about him.

Watch this movie "Away from Her"

Away from Her

Steve Job mentions about this movie in his 2008 Jan Speech while introducing iTunes Movie Rentals. This has a great rating and the story seems very good.

Avoid Las Palapas Buffet

One of my collegue gave a high opinion on this restaurant. I wanted to try it as i like mexican food. I viewed their menu online and found to my surprise that they have buffet. I got soexcited and built huge expectation and went there. The buffet looked like a arrangement of left over food. I was there at 7 PM and most people had al a carte instead of buffet. The Cheese quesadillas was a comedy. They put a little cheese on a smalltaco and kept it and it was dry and cold. Faalutas was nothing great. Just Dry. Bean and rice was just average. Tortillas was normal.Fajitas was also normal. Overall i will rate it bad and will not visit this place for buffet. I hope that the quesadillas will be better if we ordered it as ala carte.

5 days since i left bagel

Success.....

Its 5 days since i left bagel. I ate oatmeal on 4 days and taco on 1 day.

How to kill a Lion in banking style ?

HSBC Method :

Hire a lion. Give him full rest & make him lazy, Pay him more than his
expectation, Never say with him to do any work upto six months, after six
months tell him that now you have to fullfil ur yearly target within six
months otherwise u will be kickout from jungle. Lion dies due to fear, that
if he loose this lazy animals jungle where he will go.

ICICI method:

Hire a lion. Give him hell a lot of work and pay him lower salary than his
politically astute peers. Restructure his job, position, boss,
collegues, designation, department, salary, location every 6 months. Remove
all lions above 40 from the organisation by giving them VRS. If he kills 2
goats a day, give him target of killing 20 elephants a day, when there
are just 10 elephants in the jungle. Lion dies of exhaustion, overkill and
restructuring.

HDFC method:

Hire a lion and ask him to meow like a cat . Give him lots of ESOPs and
grass to eat. He will die eventually of hope and starvation.

Citibank method:

Hire the lion, make him take 14 tests and tell him that if he doesn't score
90% he will lose the job. Ask him to extract 60 kg meat out of a 40kg goat.
Lion dies of the strain.

ABN AMRO method:

Hire the lion. Give him high impossible targets and expect a premature
delivery of these targets. If the targets are delivered, clap for him in a
townhall and if not delivered humiliate him regularly. Lion either dies of
excitement or starts behaving like Tom Hanks in Terminal.

StanChart method 1:

Hire a lion, motivate him to outshine other lions in the jungle. Load him
with impractical targets and if he finds the prey, ensure jackals in the
jungle snatch the prey and the lion dies in oblivion......

StanChart method 2:
Recruits a lion, gives him the power of mouse. Lion dies of overexpectation
and no results.............

Kotak method :

Hire a lion, load him with targets to focus on value instead of volume.
Every quarter change the style and make his life miserable. If he survives
in the system reward him with a hefty bonus.

RBI Method:

Hire a lion and give him a 3000 page circular on how to kill a goat. Amend
the circular atleast three times a day. Send him on inspection to the
jungle, where he can threaten to cancel the hunting licence of any
fox, wolf, bear, jackal etc who have violated any provision of the 3000 page
circular. Lion dies of boredom.

Quit Bagel

I have been thinking about joining a bagel deaddiction camp for quite sometime. With all odds, i am quite successful in ensuring that i get to eat my favorite bagel everyday. It has often crossed my mind that i should quit bagel, but then i question myself WHY? Though Bagel is loaded with carb and the cream cheese is loaded with fat, they are surely not more than 100% of the daily required intake. But considering that i get so much satisfaction out of that round bun with a hole, why not make that to motivate myself and reward myself.

Here goes the scheme. NO RUNNING; NO BAGEL. If my miss my running on any specific day, I should not eat bagel the following day. Nice Deal. So let me start with today. I didnt run today, so no bagel tomorrow. My breakfast could be a bean and cheese tortilla or oatmeal.

PIN NUMBER REVERSAL (VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW)

I got this in one of the forward mails and not sure if this is true. I think it is applicable only in India, though not sure.

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin in reverse. For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you.
This information was recently broadcasted on TV and it states that it is seldom used because people don't know it exists. Please pass this along to everyone possible.

I stand corrected
This is a hoax.

Om Shanti Om - Hindi Movie Review

After a long time, i got to see a hindi movie...This movie looked as if it was taken in 1980s. I slowly realized that the movie is set in that time, so no wonder, to enfforce the reality, the director has made the costumes and characters to suite that era...

In india, this movie has grossed Rs.85 crores ($22 Million) in 6 weeks. Worldwide, its grosss is $39 million....

Watch Arjun Rampal in a very different type of role...Unfortunately, his charm / charisma is lost in the character...

Eggnog - The Nog part in the Name.

On the christmas day, i was fortunate in being a part of the American Family. All of us had eggnog when a inquisitive boy asked his Mom where the What the Nog in eggnog meant? I wondered why i never asked that question in particular and such questions in general. The tools that i have access to (e.g. Wiki, google) should have made me more inquisitive than ever. But I/it failed.

Coming to the point, Eggnog (or egg nog) is a sweetened dairy-based beverage made with milk, cream, sugar, beaten eggs (which gives it a frothy texture), and flavoured with ground cinnamon and nutmeg; alcoholic versions also exist with the addition of various liquors, such as rum, brandy, or whisky.

2 different NOG Story

1. The drink adopted the NOG part of its name from the word noggin, a Middle English phrase used to describe a small, wooden, carved mug used to serve alcohol in.

2. Yet another story is that the term derived from the name egg-and-grog, a common Colonial term used to describe rum. Eventually the term was shortened to egg'n'grog, then eggnog.

I Love Apple

Tom hanks says in Forrest Gump "He got me invested in some kinda fruit company.” referring to Apple

Imagine Apple stores no longer have Cash Registers. Each store conceirge (note the word!) has a portable scanner in their hip holster, Receipts are e-mailed on the spot or, if the customer prefers, a paper version emerges from printers hidden underneath display tables.

"We try to pattern the feeling to a 5-star hotel," said Apple's retail chief, Ron Johnson. "It's not about selling. It's about creating a place where you belong."

I cant imagine Apple has innovated so much that it offers the following:
"For $99 a year, a customer gets up to one hour a week to learn about a wide-range of subjects tailored to the customer's interest or abilities. The program is for beginners and experts alike and can cover how to set up computers, make movies, build Web sites or put together a scrapbook or family newsletter."

Slow Down Culture

A GOOD ARTICLE. READ UNTIL THE END.

An interesting reflection: Slow Down Culture

It's been 18 years since I joined Volvo, a Swedish
company. Working for
them has proven to be an interesting experience. Any
project here takes 2
years to be finalized, even if the idea is simple
and brilliant. It's a
rule.

Globalize processes have caused in us (all over the
world) a general sense
of searching for immediate results. Therefore, we
have come to posses a
need to see immediate results. This contrasts
greatly with the slow
movements of the Swedish. They, on the other hand,
debate, debate, debate,
hold x quantity of meetings and work with a
slowdown scheme. At the end,
this always yields better results.

Said in another words:
1. Sweden is about the size of
San Pablo, a state in Brazil.
2. Sweden has 2 million
inhabitants.
3. Stockholm, has 500,000 people.
4. Volvo, Escania, Ericsson,
Electrolux, Nokia are some
of its renowned companies (Volvo supplies the
NASA).

The first time I was in Sweden, one of my
colleagues picked me up at the
hotel every morning. It was September, bit cold and
snowy. We would arrive
early at the company and he would park far away
from the entrance (2000
employees drive their car to work). The first day, I
didn't say anything,
either the second or third. One morning I asked,
"Do you have a fixed
parking space? I've noticed we park far from the
entrance even when there
are no other cars in the lot." To which he replied,
"Since we're here early
we'll have time to walk, and whoever gets in late
will be late and need a
place closer to the door. Don't you think so? Imagine
my face.

Nowadays, there's a movement in Europe named
Slow Food. This movement
establishes that people should eat and drink
slowly, with enough time to
taste their food, spend time with the family,
friends, without rushing.
Slow Food is against its counterpart: the spirit of
Fast Food and what it
stands for as a lifestyle. Slow Food is the basis
for a bigger movement
called Slow Europe, as mentioned by Business Week.
Basically, the movement
questions the sense of "hurry" and craziness"
generated by globalization,
fueled by the desire of "having in quantity" (life
status) versus "having
with quality", "life quality" or the quality of
being".

French people, even though they work only 35
hours per week, are more
productive than Americans or British. Germans
have established 29 hour
workweeks and have seen their productivity been driven
up by 20%. This slow
attitude has brought forth the US's attention,
pupils of the fast and the
"do it now!". This no-rush attitude doesn't represent
doing less or having
a lower productivity. It means working and
doing things with greater
quality, perfection, with more attention to
detail and less stress. It
means reducing rejects and wastage. It means
reestablishing family values,
friends, free and leisure time. Taking the "now",
present and concrete,
versus the "global", undefined and anonymous
future. It means taking
humans' essential values, the simplicity of living.
It stands for a less
coercive work environment, more happy, lighter and
more productive where
humans enjoy doing what they know best how to do.

It's time to stop and think on how companies
need to develop serious
quality with no-rush that will increase
productivity and the quality of
products and services, without losing the essence of
spirit.

In the movie, Scent of a Woman, there's a scene where
Al Pacino asks a girl
to dance and she replies, "I can't, my boyfriend
will be here any minute
now". To which Al responds, "A life is lived in
an instant". Then they
dance to a tango.

Many of us live our lives running behind time, but we
only reach it when we
die of a heart attack or in a car accident rushing
to be on time. Others
are so anxious of living the future that they forget
to live the present,
which is the only time that truly exists. We all have
equal time throughout
the world. No one has more or less. The difference
lies in how each one of
us does with our time. We need to live each moment.

As John Lennon said, "Life is what happens to you
while you're busy making
other plans".

Congratulations for reading till the end of this
message. There are many
who will have stopped in the middle so as not
to waste time in this
globalized world.

Vijay's Bold Move

Vijay has been showing off his bodies since a long time, but most of them in bed room / bath room / swimming pool scenes and that time, noone was bothered looking at his body with special focus (for all known reasons). But now with Azgagiya Tamil Magan, he is showing off his body as a HERO in the ranks of Rocky and Terminator.

I was amazed looking at Shahrukh's body with OSM (On Shanti Om). I think he has put in a lot of hours in Gym....even with his back problem. Shame on me, that i am not doing 1% of what he is doing or what i can do...

Anyway, look at some of our heroes in the same light....Vijay needs improvement, or atleast some good photographer.

Invitation to Yama....

I have been making mistakes knowingly....Not a good sign at all and behaviour needs to be changed immediately....I guess i am waiting for some magic to happen....I will let you know when the MAJIC does HAPPEN....

Mistakes in no specific order:

1. Not running at all
2. Not doing any form of excercise
3. Not keeping track of the personal balanced score card
4. Eating Sweets
5. Eating as i like with absoluely no restrictions
6. Mercurial more than usual

I could partly blame some of these to the shifting my house from Parkhill Apartment to Whispering Creek Villas...But how many more days can i say this reason to be bad....

My Friend Says...

I read this very interesting para in ET - when we look at the burning candle what we notice is a constant flame. We think the flame is just there and the candle is burning down. But in reality as the wax melts the wick gets exposed and the new flame engulfs the old flame. The flame is constantly changing. its not the same steady flame. I found immense sense in that.

"satisfaction" is a state of mind

i am thinking about this line that my friend mentioned.

Another friend narrates his story:

satisfaction is very personal. beleive me some time back i was in
bangalore trying to locate a pizza hut and i was sort of frustrated as
i could not locate it and i was adament about having a 250 bucks of
pizza. while hunting for it i just went to a shop near by to find out
about the Pizza hut. In that shop I saw 2 school kids (may be) buying
chikki . Man after they bought it they were so happy. By their looks
they seem not to be doing financially well, but seeing thier happiness
with what we call "Just a chikki" really killed me and forget Tag Huer
or wht ever we are talking or geox. That day i realised satisfaction is
based on our circumstances and how we are placed in life and it will
keep changing.

To Stay Motivated is a Blessing

When i ran 50 miles in Aug 2007 and 60 miles in Sep 2007, i raised my target to 100 miles. I stayed motivated. But the blessing was taken away from me and i am put to test. I have lost my motivation and it is very difficult for me to get motivated to run. I have lost the blessing. I have run only 15 miles till date in Oct 2007.

God, Bless me and Help me to stay motivated to run 50 miles in Oct and 100 miles in November.

Beautiful Bangalore

Sobha Developers is building an apartment in HSR layout, Bangalore. There is an army lans next to it. Some houses have good views to the army land. Army land has full of trees. Seems to be good to look at from the house. Some snaps....

Which is a good location in Bangalore to buy an apartment

Any suggestions on which is a good location in Bangalore to buy a property that will have a good rental value and long term appreciation.

You can't beat me Snail!!!!!

Kavitha walked in from Gym saying this. She completed 4 miles today, the maximum that she has done in a day. The competition has begun! Lets see who wins this week...

Focus on making money Vs Focus on spending money

With all the stock market bull run and increase in property prices by multiple folds, my friends are seriously discussing on when to buy, what to buy and how to make a lot of money. I am seeing that they spend all their energy on how to make more and more money. I am yet to come across people who focus on how to spend the money in the most enjoyable way. Having seen them for over 10 years in my life, i do not see any great shift in their life style to be in line with their affordability and richness. They still drive their 5 year old car (not a high end model), they still live in normal houses, they still eat the same kind of food, they still slog 12 hours a day in work, their minds are still preoccupied with work during weekends, they still fight, they still feel depressed, they still dont travel as much they can afford to, .... and the list goes on and on. Can someone start talking about how to live life with all the money earned....

some of my thoughts (may not be apt for everyone as each has their priority)

1. Good massage every week
2. Good attire and personal grooming
3. Hitech gadgets at home
4. Good Vacation every year(Tahiti,my dream place now)
5. Cruises every year
6. Visit new place every quarter

Where is my motivation??

I think the motivation to run has run away from me. I am not running for the last 4 days.

I think the culprit is my ipod. My nike+ipod kit is not working. I am planning to return my ipod and get a new one (the 4 gm video ipod) and may be a new nike ipod kit. Hopefully, if it works, i may get back the motivation.

Corpus Christi + Holiday Inn = Pure Joy

We spent a weekend in Corpus and stayed in Holiday Inn. This is the only hotel in Corpus that faces the beach. We got a sea facing room. IF you decide to go to Corpus, stay in Holiday Inn.

Food that brought joy ...

Though we keep trying different kinds of new food, it is very rare for a food to give us utmost joy and make us feel bad that we missed this food till now in life.

After coming to US from India, i have tried various types of food, primary mexican, in addition to italian, chinese, thai and vietnamese. Of all these, the one that gave me utmost joy is 'Five Layer Dip". This is available in HEB, and the five layer consists of Bean, Tomato Salsa, Guacamole, Sour cream and Cheese.
